Breast problems including lumps, pain and discharge are usually discovered by self examination and they can be pretty scary for a woman because they make her think of breast cancer. Not all breast problems signalize this disease, but this does not mean that it can’t be other serious conditions. Women should check with their physician every time they notice something unusual in their breast area. It might be nothing or it might be their opportunity to identify a fatal disease in useful time and get adequate treatment. It has been often said that periodical self examination of breasts can save lives.
Breast lumps can occur out of various reasons and in most of the cases they are not cancerous. However, the woman should undergo some tests to be sure of their nature. In young women breast lumps are often the result of hormonal changes and occur before the period. If they soon disappear, they are nothing to worry about. In women over 30, a breast lump requires a mammography and perhaps other tests to exclude the possibility of cancer. Breast lumps can be cysts, adenomas or abscess lumps. None of these forms is cancerous. Cysts are a result of hormonal changes and are actually sacs filled with a liquid. They are quite rate in young women. Abscess lumps usually occur in breast feeding women and adenomas are related with the milk ducts. They occur in women below 30 and they are accompanied by nipple discharge.
Discharge often affects women who breast feed. Sometimes it occurs in other women also as a result of hypothyroidism or prescribed pills. Women need to understand that the milk ducts are likely to discharge certain substance at some point or another. In most of the cases, unless the discharge is mixed with blood, there’s no need to worry. Your physician is best entitled to say if nipple discharge requires further investigations or not.
Breast problems can also include pain. This is usually related with a woman’s period and it occurs just before it. As long as it follows this pattern, breast pain is nothing out of the ordinary. It turns into a problem if it’s constant of if it bothers the woman in different times of the month, with no connection to the period. Even so, it might be caused by factors like wearing an unsuitable bra or by too much caffeine.
Sometimes herbal remedies can alleviate breast problems such as breast lumps, pain or discharge, but they don’t substitute for tests that exclude fatal conditions.
